Canadians understand
the romance of rail. The somber wail of a train whistle never fails
to catch at my heartstrings and rekindle rail trip memories. Our
VIA Rail crosses the entire country with its classic Canadian,
rolling through towns and villages in central and eastern Canada,
Canadian Shield country in wild northern Ontario, a thousand miles
of grain fields on the Canadian Prairies, and finally, the capping
glory of the Rockies. For shorter jaunts, The Rocky Mountaineer
regularly crosses the Rockies between British Columbia and Alberta
on whats been called North Americas most spectacular rail trip.
The Royal Canadian Pacifics vintage rail cars from the early 1900s,
restored to mahogany-trimmed perfection, travel Alberta and British
Columbia. BC Rail runs up the wild West Coast, VIA runs sprints
in eastern Canada and the Maritimes and up to remote Churchill,
Manitoba, and Algoma Central Railway runs to the awesome Agawa Canyon
north of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
