Fresh-fallen
snow in Canada means pure play. Plunge into the fun at the winter
festivals in our major cities, o~ enjoy the season through culture
winters when urbane Canadians go indoors for theater opera, ballet
and symphony. Venture outside our cities to ski mountain slopes
in the Rockies, the Gatineaus, or the Laurentians, or try cross-country
skiing or hiking on winter-silent trails anywhere. Practise snowshoeing,
remembering falling is part of the fun and the learning. Or snuggle
up on a sled and let a team of eager Huskies pull you through ice-frosted
forests or across sub-Arctic tundra. Follow polar bears and cubs
on migration to and from the Arctic ice packs, and fall instantly
in love with the tiny, bouncy cubs, as I did. Watch the rhythmic,
hypnotic play of the Aurora Borealis, eerie sheets of glowing, green
light, ripple across the black night sky. And on our wild East and
West Coasts, see winter storm waves surge in from the ocean while
you stand, Mackinaw wrapped, against the raw wind and icy sea spray.
